Council reveals nominated development sites
East Herts Council has revealed the list of sites submitted as part of the first stage of reviewing the District Plan.

In a process known as a Call For Sites, interested parties are invited to suggest sites for development. These site are typically put foward by landowners, developers, agents, and other site promoters.
The Call For Sites process started in July and ended on 30th September 2024. Some sites were submitted later and have been included in the published list.
The new District Plan needs to identify enough land to meet future requirements, including sites for housing, employment, community facilities and infrastructure.
The next stage in the process is the Strategic Land Availability Assessment. This is a technical exercise to determine the quantity and suitability of land identified in the Call For Sites to determine their viability for housing development. The SLAA aims to determine if the site are suitable, available and achieveable.
Nominated sites include:
- Terrace Wood Nursery
- Hertford telephone exchange
- Industrial land at the end of Marshgate Drive
- Madford Retail Park
- Archers spring wood and land to the west
- Land south of Welwyn Road
- Land east of Wadesmill Road, Bengeo
- Wallfields
- Old London Road car park
- Land behind homes in Queens Road in the Ashbourne valley
Housebuildings targets are set by central government and for East Herts the figure is 1,265 new homes per annum from 2028-43, representing a total of at least 18,975 dwellings to be identified during that timescale.
There will be two public consultations on the draft District Plan followed by a public enquiry. The Plan is expected to come in to force in 2028.
