New A602 road to open Monday

Sunday 6 August 2023

The new alignment of the A602 Ware Road between Tonwell and Watton-at-Stone is scheduled to open this Monday 7th August.

The new road alignment is the final stage of a £23m scheme of improvements to the A602 between Ware and Stevenage.

Other works already completed include changes at the A10 Ware North interchange, realignment of the Westmill Road, improvements to the Anchor Lane roundabout, road-widening and enlargement of the A602/A119 roundabout at Watton, and a new signal controlled junction at Hertford Road in south Stevenage.

The project also includes an off-road cycle track along part of the A602 which links up popular local routes and allows safe crossing of the busy main road.

The new section of road between Watton-at-Stone and Tonwell was due to open last year, but delayed following the discovery of defective prefabricated beams installed on the new Dane End bridge.

The changes have been made to improve traffic flows along the A602. Problems identified included traffic blocked by vehicles turning right, tight bends, poor visibility, and long queues at junctions.

The project has been paid for by an £18.5m investment from the government funded Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and £5.2m from Hertfordshire County Council.

Speaking in 2020, county council cabinet member for highways and environment, Phil Bibby, said: "With around 100,000 new homes expected in Hertfordshire by 2031, we’re expecting an increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, so it's vital that we invest in key schemes to improve the road network and keep Hertfordshire moving as the population grows.'
