Developer plans Bircherley Green retirement homes

Monday 10 October 2022

A disused plot of land in the town centre could become 36 retirement homes if proposals receive planning consent.

The proposals also include three retail units on the ground floor of the four-storey block on the corner of Railway Street and Bircherley Street.

Buildings on the plot were demolished in 2018 as part of the Bircherley Green redevelopment project, but the site was abandoned when the Diagio Pension Trust sold the site the following year. Since then the area has been largely disused, other than as a service yard for the adjacent building site where Chase New Homes are constructing 98 new homes and 3500 sqm of retail and commercial floorspace.

Feedback received online will be considered by Churchill Retirement Living and where feasible inform further development of, or changes to the design and layout of the proposed scheme.

The next step is continued consultation and ongoing discussions with the Planning Authority with the potential submission of a planning application in late 2022

The site was previously a two-storey building housing offices and three retail units, occupied by Lloyds Bank, Halfords and Isobel Hospice. Following demolition there were plans for a hotel on the site but Premier Inn pulled out of the project in 2020.

More details about the proposals can be found on the consultation page where members of the public can provide feedback on the plans.
