Planning application submitted for 118 homes in Bengeo
Plans for 118 homes on a greenfield site north of Bengeo have been submitted to East Herts Council by Borehamwood developer Durkan Homes.
The proposals could see a mix of 1 and 2 bed apartments and 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom houses, on land between Sacombe Road and Wadesmill Road.
The site is allocated for residential development in the adopted East Herts District Plan.
The scheme also includes a mix of open public spaces and children’s play facilities, as well as a network of pedestrian and cycle routes running through the site and beyond.
Bill Beyzade, Managing Director of Durkan Homes, said: "It’s great to have the opportunity to create more new high quality sustainable homes in Bengeo, on land that’s already allocated for residential development. These new homes will help meet local demand and give people the opportunity to get onto the property ladder. We have consulted locals and worked with all key stakeholders in delivery of the Master Plan Framework that allows us to create a new sustainable community that will help the local area thrive."
"As well as creating a mix of homes, we’ll be building new amenities to encourage healthy living and create better connected communities. This builds on the success of our nearby and popular Stiles neighbourhood. We’ve really appreciated the feedback on our proposals to date, and we’re pleased to have submitted our application to East Herts District Council."
Tha plans are opposed by protest group Save Bengeo Field who point out that The District Plan states that homes should only be built on the condition of prior extraction of minerals from the site. A proposed quarry on the site was ruled out following a public enquiry in 2019.
The group's website says: "Bengeo Field should not be considered for any development, given that at the quarry enquiry the Planning Inspector, working on behalf of the Secretary of State, agreed that this field should remain in its natural state".
The proposed development is immediately north of the former Bengeo Nursery site which has seen around 50 new homes constructed by Durkan. The company are also in the process of building 49 new homes in Tamworth Road.
