Castle grounds set for makeover
Major improvements to the grounds of Hertford Castle could be on the cards if a lottery grant is approved.
An initial award of £350,000 has already been secured that will allow detailed proposals to be drawn up for the historic site.
Hertford Town Council, East Herts District Council, and the County Council’s Countryside Management Service will collaborate to develop this exciting project, which could include:
- redevelopment of the children's play area
- protecting and highlighting the site’s oldest features, like the motte and curtain wall
- restoring the riverbanks
- improvements to paths and bridges
- improving signage and information boards
- a program of activities, including wildlife workshops and health and wellbeing activities
There are also plans to refurbish the Ashley Webb shelter and provide a cantilever walk around the motte.
Once planning is completed, a further grant will be applied for to deliver the works and events program, with completion of the project between 2025 and 2028.
Much of the grounds are owned by East Herts Council, with the moat garden owned by the town council and land around the gatehouse owned by Lord Sailsbury.
