Hertford Theatre gets a new name

Tuesday 23 April 2024

The new name for Hertford Theatre has been revealed as the wraps come off the signage and the perimeter fence is reclad.

The new name for the venue is BEAM and shines a light on the multifunctional nature of the community space as both a theatre and multiplex cinema.

The redevelopment will see first release films on offer with the addition of three bespoke cinema screens, a brand new studio auditorium for smaller live acts and performances, and a plaza-style foyer with riverside café-bar. There will also be two hireable community spaces and improved access to all areas of the building.

The theatre was closed in June 2021 and work on the redevelopment project started in November 2022.

The cost of the venue has risen by 50% from £20 to over £30m due to inflation.

East Herts Council’s Executive Member for Wellbeing, Councillor Sarah Hopewell, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that residents can now get a real flavour of their amazing new arts venue. Re-launching with a different identity reflects the fact that BEAM is, to all intents and purposes, a brand new venue.

"With varied programming and an on-going commitment to engaging the local community, there will be something for everyone. BEAM is a fantastic community asset which will enhance the cultural life of East Herts for years to come."

Rhys Thomas, director of BEAM, said: "This is a once-in-generation building. A testament to the positive impact the arts can have on the economic and cultural welfare of our local and regional communities. With several big names lining up to perform at BEAM the team cannot wait to open the doors to our audiences across East Herts and beyond."

BEAM opens on Friday 23rd August and a new website can be found at beamhertford.co.uk.
